Scientists have discovered that the sinking of metals into the Earth's core can be prevented by impact-driven mixing of mantle materials. Previous simulations showed that most metals quickly drain down to the core, but the new findings suggest that a partially molten zone under a localized impact-generated magma ocean could stall the descent of planetesimal metals.
